To legalize an Australian Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate or other civil status certificate, an original certificate is required - the certificate must be issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state where the event took place (New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory, Southern Australia, Western Australia).
How to obtain a new copy of an Australian birth, marriage or death certificate
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
Applications for copies of ACT birth, death and marriage certificates may be submitted online.
ACT Birth Certificates: Copies of birth certificates can be obtained for yourself (if you’re an adult), for your child (if they’re under 18) or with written authorisation.
ACT Death Certificates: Copies of death certificates can be obtained if you’re named on the death registration as the deceased’s spouse, domestic partner (at time of death), parent or child, or with written authorisation from one of the above.
ACT Marriage Certificates: Copies of marriage certificates can be obtained by those named as the bride, groom or partner on the certificate or with written authorisation.
Certified translations of Australian death, marriage and birth certificates
When presenting Australian marriage, death and birth certificates and other vital records in countries which do not have English as an official language, then a certified translation may be required. The certified translation must meet the requirements of the destination country, so that a translation done locally in Australia may not be valid.
